Appreciation and Maintenance

Chinese believe that, although diamonds and gold are expensive, it cannot be valued against jade because jade is animated with a soul. People with knowledge often buy to collect their favourite type of jade artefacts, while people with little knowledge of jade may buy coarse works.

To obtain genuine and beautiful piece of jade artefacts, one should take pains to learn about the chinese ancient art and their sources. To appreciate, the criteria lie in the brightness of colour and lustre, compactness of inner structure, and the delicacy of the craftsmanship of the object. For example, Nephrite jade (6.0 and 6.5 on Moh’s hardness scale) creates an oily lustre and Jadeite jade (6.5 and 7.0 on moh’s hardness scale) creates a vitreous lustre. Tiny cracks can lower the value of jade. Having purchased a jade article is just half the process of collecting because it need constant care while in possession. Jade is like a child that needs care, collectors need to work on regular basis to maintain this artwork, or blemishes may appear.

Maintenance of jade objects:

1. Avoid bumping on hard surfaces as jade is delicate. Although sometimes a crack cannot be seen by the naked eye, the interior structure may have been damaged. As time goes on, it will appear and reduce the value of the piece.

2. Protect jade articles from dust or greasy dirt. If tainted, they must be scrubbed with a soft brush and light suds and washed with clean water.

3. When left un-used, it is advisable to store the jade article in a colourless case or box to protect it from being bumped.

4. Jade should be kept away from perfume, perspiration or chemicals. The brightness of jade risks corrosion, especially emerald and other high quality jade, so it is better to clean it with a soft cloth after wearing or handling it.

5. Do not expose jade to sunlight for a long time, or it may expand and the quality will change slightly.

6. Jade has some water contents, so keep it in an area of humidity to protect it from over-drying, it can leave the piece looking blemish and dulled. If desired, a layer of wax can be applied to the surface (please read how to clean jade).
