According to ancient chinese belief, pi xiu, was regarded as one of the auspicious animals comparing favourably with dragon, phoenix, tortoise and qilin in chinese traditional culture. It took the responsibility of safekeeping the emperor’s money and valuables and got the symbolic image of royalty. Ancient chinese people believed that pi xiu like to eat gold, silver, treasures and jewels. When treasures go inside the pi xiu, it would not come out again. So pi xiu also symbolise attracting fortune and treasures to come into one’s pocket and making it’s owner gaining real fortune and power.
Feng shui experts nowadays even deem pi xiu as a propitious animal of turning misfortune to fortune since pi xiu is said to have the ability of counteracting evil force. Pi xiu is usually collected in set unit since male pi xiu represents good luck in making money and female one represents the vault of keeping money. In other words, you may get rich only if you got a good storeroom to keep the money. It is recommended that you need to stoke the set of pi xiu everyday and good luck of making money will then follow you.
